Artifacts

The Warriors set introduced a new card type: Artifact cards.  Artifacts have been found in every set after that. Artifacts are lasting-effect cards having a grail icon. A player mixes Artifact cards into his play deck as usual. As Artifact cards are drawn they are put into play face up in the player's territory, forming the Artifact pile. As more

Artifact cards are drawn, they are placed on the Artifact pile.  (A player may have more than one of the same artifact in the artifact pile, as long as the player follows the rules of one artifact per 50 cards.  So, a player with a 100 card deck may have 2 Holy-of-Holies artifacts in his deck.)

Each player may have only one Artifact card activated at a time.  In other words, when an Artifact card is played, it remains in play until another Artifact card is played (activated) by the same player.  The card on top is the activated Artifact.

Unless an Artifact states specifically that it works only for the holder of the Artifact, all Artifacts work univerally throughout the game.  (For example, the Artifact Three Nails does not permit any demons from blocking a rescue attempt.  Because the Artifact does not limit the Artifact only to one player the Artifact will work against everyone, including the holder.  So, if a player were to make a rescue attempt for one of the holder's lost souls, the holder may not block with a demon.)

A player may change the activated Artifact by searching through his Artifact pile and placing a different artifact card on top.  This is the Artifact Activation Phase and takes place following the player's draw phase but before the player's rescue attempt.  This card remains the activated Artifact until the end of the draw phase on his next turn at which time he may change the Artifact card or leave it the same (or turn it face down so that he has no activated Artifact).  Artifacts mayonly be added to the Artifact pile during the Artifact Activation Phase.

If an Artifact card has a limited number of times it can be used during a game then following its last available use it is discarded on the player's next Artifact Activation Phase.

If an activated Artifact is discarded, it's effect stays active through the entire turn unless the card discarding the artifact states otherwise.  If an activated Artfact is discarded and it's effect is negated, no other artifact in the artifact pile takes effect that turn.  A new artifact may be activated the next turn during the player's Artifact Activation Phase.
