Limited vs. Unlimited Printing

New players are often frustrated when in comes to understanding the difference between the limited edition and the unlimited edition. Afterall, they are both referred to as the original set. I have done my best to clear up the confusion.

Identifying differences between Limited from Unlimited

Collectable playing card games are originally released in what is called a limited printing. Only a certain number of cards are printed to see if the game will become popular. If the game catches on, the manufacturer then reprints original series. The second printing is called the unlimited printing. Cactus Game Design has released both the limited printing (17 million cards printed) and an unlimited printing (10 million cards printed) of the original set.

Limited missing (C) Cactus Game Design, Inc.

Here is how you can tell the difference between the two printings. The limited cards do NOT have (C) Cactus Game Design Inc. underneath the Illustrator's name. The unlimited cards do have Cactus Game Design Inc. under the Illustrator's name.

The color of some brigades were slightly changed

If you have purchased both the limited and unlimited edition cards you have quickly noticed that a few identical cards have very different brigade colors. The pale green brigade has both a dark green and a pale green color. The crimson brigade has both red and light red colors as well as the gold brigade which has both yellow and gold colors. What is the reason for this? According to creator Rob Anderson, colors were changed in the unlimited printing "to more accurately reflect the color we were decribing in the rulebook." Therefore the cards are to be played together, even if the colors are slightly different.

The pictures on the left of each set are from the limited series, the pictures on the right of each set are from the unlimited series. The colors on the right have become the standard color for each new set printed.

The card text was changed on a few cards

As some of you have noticed the card names of some limited printing cards are in the picture area itself and some are in the title bar. This was corrected in the unlimited printing so all cards now have their names in the same place above the picture.

Six press sheets create variants in the limited printing

The limited edition was printed on six separate sheets, a sheet for deck A, deck B, commons, uncommons, rare, and promotional cards. Thus, the same card could have been printed on several of the press sheets. Because the sheets were built separately, subtle and sometimes blatant, differences showed up. For example, the Christian Soldier card has two very different pictures; one is more of a close up than the other.

If you are like me and want to collect the complete set of limited edition cards including all variants, you can find that list at the top of the page under "Limited Edition List". Good luck!
